Newborn Heel Stick Trainer: Step-by-Step User Guide

Overview

Newborn screening is an important health check performed shortly after a baby is born, usually within the first 24 to 48 hours of life. The purpose of this screening is to detect certain rare but serious conditions early, allowing timely intervention and treatment.

The test is done by collecting a small amount of blood from the baby’s heel, commonly known as a heel stick. This simple procedure provides enough sample to screen for multiple metabolic, hormonal, and genetic disorders, helping ensure a healthier start for newborn.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1. Prepare the Simulated Blood: Mix the blood powder and water at a ratio of 1:100. For example, 0.5 g of blood powder can be mixed with 50 ml of water.

(Note: Most kit include 10g blood powder, but in some regions it may not be provided due to shipping restrictions. Thank you for understanding.)

Step 2. Fill the Blood Reservoir: Use the 10ml syringe included in the kit to inject the prepared simulated blood into the model’s blood reservoir. The reservoir can hold approximately 3 ml of liquid

Step 3. Hold the Model and Prepare the Lancet: Hold the model with the correct hand position, while using your other hand to pick up a pressure-activated lancet (3 packs are included). The proper hand positioning is shown in the illustration below:

Step 4. Perform the Heel Stick: Use the lancet to make a puncture in the prepared heel site. Then, gently apply pressure to the heel to express the simulated blood. This completes the blood collection process.
